Karishma Kapoor is an Indian actress. She is a member of famous Kapoor family of bollywood. She was born on June 25, 1974 to actors Randhir Kapoor and Babita Shivdasani in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Actress Kareena Kapoor is her younger sister.
She is of Punjabi Hindu descent on her father's side and she is of Sindhi Hindu and British descent on her mother's side.
Karishma did her schooling from Cathedral and John Connon School, Mumbai and later took admission in Sophia College, Mumbai but she dropped out of college to pursue a career in movies.
Women in the Kapoor family were not allowed to pursuing acting and due to this reason conflict arised between her parents and they separated in 1988. They reconciled in 2007 after living separately for several years.
She made her acting debut at the age of 17 years with the movie Prem Qaidi (1991) opposite Harish Kumar.
In 1996, she played the female lead in Dharmesh Darshan's Raja Hindustani opposite Aamir Khan. The movie was a box-office success and was also one of the most successful films of all time in India.
Yash Chopra was impressed by her performance in Raja Hindustani (1996) and he signed Karishma in the supporting role in Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) alongside Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Akshay Kumar. Dil To Pagal Hai was massive hit at the box-office and Karishma won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role.
She got the role of Nisha in Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) after the role was rejected by Raveena Tandon, Juhi Chawla, Kajol, Manisha Koirala and Shilpa Shetty.
She was in a relationship with Ajay Devgan from 1992-1995.
Karishma Kapoor got engaged to Abhishek Bachchan on 11 October 2002, at his father Amitabh Bachchan's 60th birthday celebration. The engagement was called off after a few months in January 2003. The reason of the break-up is said to be her mother Babita's interference.
Karishma Kapoor got married to businessman Sunjay Kapur, the CEO of Sixt India on September 29, 2003 in Mumbai. The couple has two children together, a daughter Samaira and a son Kiaan Raj Kapoor. The couple filed for divorce through mutual consent on June 4, 2014. Their divorce was finalised on March 31, 2016.
She had a troubled married life with Sunjay Kapur. Karishma revealed that the torture from Sunjay began as soon as she got married to him and Sunjay had actually tried auctioning her on their honeymoon and tried forcing her to sleep with his friends. However, when Karishma refused, she was beaten up by Sunjay. She also alleged that Sunjay was actually still in a physical relationship with his first wife and when Karishma tried to confront him regarding the same, he assaulted her in return.
She has changed the spelling of her name from "Karishma Kapoor" to "Karisma Kapoor" according to numerology.
