Amitabh Bachchan is an Indian film actor and host who is regarded as one of the most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema. He was born on October 11, 1942 to celebrated hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan & his wife, the social activist Teji Bachchan in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. He also has a brother named Ajitabh Bachchan.
Initially his parents wanted to name him Inquilaab, inspired by the phrase "Inquilab Zindabad" which was popularly used during the Indian independence movement. The name Amitabh was suggested to his father by poet Sumitranandan Pant.
His real surname was Shrivastava but his father, who opposed the caste system and had adopted the pen name Bachchan under which he had published all his works.
He did his schooling from Boy's High School & College in Allahabad and Sherwood College in Nainital and later graduated from Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi.
After finishing his studies, he applied to become a radio presenter for All India Radio, Delhi but was not selected.
He worked as a business executive for a freight company, Bird & Company in Kolkata before starting his film career.
He got his break in hindi film industry through a letter of recommendation from the then Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi, as Amitabh was the friend of her son, Rajiv Gandhi.
He started his film career in 1969 as a voice narrator in Mrinal Sen's National Award-winning movie Bhuvan Shome.
He made his acting debut as one of the seven protagonists in the movie Saat Hindustani (1969). He won the National Award for Best Newcomer for his role in the movie.
While shooting for Zanjeer (1973), the cast and crew had decided to go abroad for holiday's if the movie was a box-office hit. When Amitabh for his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan's permission, his father asked if Jaya was also going. After Amitabh told him that Jaya is also going, he was told to marry Jaya before going abroad together.
Amitabh Bachchan got married to actress Jaya Bhaduri on June 3, 1973. The couple has two children, Shweta Bachchan Nanda and Abhishek Bachchan.
Due to his friendship with Rajiv Gandhi he fought the Lok Sabha election from his hometown Allahabad for the 8th Lok Sabha against H. N. Bahuguna, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He won by one of the highest victory margins ever in Indian elections. However he left the politics mid-term after he and Rajiv Gandhi along with Hinduja Brothers were implicated in the infamous Bofors case.
The French director François Truffaut called him a "one-man industry".
In 2018, he appeared in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 at number 7, a list based on the income and popularity of Indian celebrities. 4
He has double M.A. (Master of Arts) degree.
He used screen name Vijay in over 20 movies.
Amitabh played the double role in 10 movies, Adalat (1976), Don (1978), Kasme Vaade (1978), The Great Gambler (1979), Desh Premee (1982), Satte Pe Satta (1982), Aakhree Raasta (1986), Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998), Lal Baadshah (1999) and Sooryavansham (1999). He had triple role in Mahaan (1983).
He suffers from vitiligo. He also suffered from a rare muscular disorder known as myasthenia gravis.
Indian adult film actor Ameatabh Bachan took this screen name because he was a huge fan of Amitabh Bachchan.
Amitabh was paid Rs. 5000 for his first movie Saat Hindustani (1969).
