Facts
Waheeda Rehman is a legendary indian actress who worked mainly in hindi movies. She is considered as one of the greatest actress in Indian film history. Waheeda was honored by Government of India with the Padma Shri in 1972 and was later awarded Padma Bhushan in 2011.
She won a National Film Award and three Filmfare Awards.
Waheeda Rehman was born on February 3, 1938 into a Dakhini Muslim family in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, India. Her father was Mohammad Abdul Rehman who worked as a district commissioner and her mother was Mumtaz Begum. She was youngest of 4 daughters.
Her father Mohammad Abdul Rehman died in 1951 when she was just in her early teens. Her mom also passed away in 1957.
Her father was transferred constantly, and this affected the studies of all 4 sisters. Zahida and Shahida managed to study up to Class 8, but Sayeeda and Waheeda didn’t get even that far.
There is still a great bonding between the four sisters (the eldest sibling Zahida has also re-located to India).
She did her schooling from St. Joseph's Convent, Vishakapatnam.
Waheeda wanted to become a doctor but her family's financial condition forced her to abandon her dream and she started accepting movie offers which she was getting due to her dancing abilities.
Her uncle Dr. Ferose Ali was a famous doctor and social activist in Brahmapur, Odisha. Waheeda gave her first performance on stage as a dancer at Brahmapur's Ganjam Kala Parishad organised by her uncle.
Waheeda was noticed when she performed in a cultural show organised by her father during a visit by India's last Governor-General C.Rajagopalachari when he was posted in Vishakapatnam. Her father was asked to use only local artistes in the programme so he roped in Waheeda and Sayeeda for the dance. Her father started receiving acting offers for Waheeda soon after that cultural show, but he kept turning them down.
Dancing on stage was considered a taboo in those days and so was a career in films but her father always used to say that dancing was an art that had to be nurtured.
Waheeda made her feature film debut with the Telugu movie Rojulu Marayi (1955) as a dancer in the song "Eruvaaka Sagaroranno Chinnanna". She was signed on a remuneration of ₹500.
Waheeda's Rojulu Marayi dance was so popular that people used to throw money at the screen whenever the song came on.
She made her acting debut with the Telugu movie Jayasimha (1955).
In 1994, she was honored with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
She is an ambassador for non-profit organization Rang De, an organisation which helps people fight against poverty.
She is a trained Bharatanatyam dancer. As a child, she and her sister Sayeeda learnt Bharatanatyam from master exponents of the time Guru Meenakshisundaram Pillai in Chennai and Guru Jayalakshmi Alva in Mumbai and performed together on stage.
Her pairing with Dev Anand was very successful and they did a number of blockbuster movies like C.I.D. (1956), Solva Saal (1958), Kala Bazar (1960), Baat Ek Raat Ki (1962) and Guide (1965). Their movies Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja (1961) and Prem Pujari (1970) were commercial failure but were critically acclaimed.
Guru Dutt, whom Waheeda considers as her mentor noticed her at the success party of Rojulu Marayi (1955) and offered her a lead role in C.I.D. (1956). She went on work in 5 other Guru Dutt classics - Pyaasa (1957), 12 O'Clock (1958), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960).
Waheeda was asked to use a different screen name just like other muslim actresses of at that like Madhubala, Nargis and Meena Kumari but she decided against it and continued using her real name.
Waheeda Rehman won the Best Actress award for her role in the English version of Guide at the Chicago Film Festival in 1965.
Waheeda Rehman and Shashi Rekhi fell in love with each other during the filming of their movie Shagoon (1964). They got married 10 years later on April 27, 1974. They have two children, a son Sohail Rekhi & a daughter Kashvi Rekhi.
She gradually withdrew from acting to take care of her children Sohail and Kashvi, before returning to bollywood in the 1980s to play mature roles.
After their marriage, they lived in a farmhouse in Bangalore. But after the death of her husband on November 21, 2000 due to Brain Hemorrhage, she re-located to her ocean-view bungalow, 'Sahil' in Bandra, Mumbai.
Waheeda Rahman played both mother and lover to Amitabh Bachchan. She played the role of his lover in Adalat (1976) and mother in Trishul (1978).
She has played the role of mother to all three actors of Bachchan family. Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan.
Waheeda and Late actress Nanda Karnataki were very close friends and they had co-starred in Kala Bazar (1960).
