Facts
Sybrand Engelbrecht (born 15 September 1988) is a South African-born first-class and Netherlands international cricketer. He is a right-handed middle-order batsman and also bowls right-arm off-break. 1

After completing his schooling at Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool in Pretoria, South Africa, he earned his Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) in Finance from The Open University in 2014 and then did his Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Project Management at the University of Cape Town in 2015. He earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Stellenbosch Business School, Cape Town, South Africa in 2018. 2
Engelbrecht first came into the limelight for his electric fielding for South Africa during the 2018 Under-19 World Cup. In a league match against Papua New Guinea on 21 February 2008 in the 2018 Under-19 World Cup, Engelbrecht took a stunning two-handed, diving catch at point to dismiss Alfred Amini. His catch is considered among best best-ever catches in cricket history and many predicted that he could become the next Jonty Rhodes. 3
He played a key role in three crucial wickets in the 2018 Under-19 World Cup final in Malaysia and helped the South African team to restrict India to a meager 159. First, he took a blinder at backward point to dismiss Virat Kohli and then took a brilliant catch of the tournament’s top-scorer Tanmay Shrivastava. He later displayed a calm mind in running out Iqbal Abdulla. However, his efforts were not enough as South Africa could score only 103 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 25 overs and lost the match by 12 runs (D/L method). 4 5
In December 2015, Sybrand Engelbrecht’s bowling action was found to be illegal as all his deliveries exceeded the 15-degree limit so he was suspended from bowling in domestic cricket with immediate effect
. However, Engelbrecht reworked on his bowling action and was cleared to resume bowling after a re-assessment of his action on January 12, 2016. 6
Despite averaging over 40 in both first-class cricket and List A cricket, Engelbrecht struggled to find a regular place in the Cape Cobras line-up due to the presence of international players like Stiaan van Zyl and JP Duminy. After he was left out of Cape Cobras’ contract list for the 2016-17 season, the South African off-spinning all-rounder relocated to the Netherlands with his family, where he continued to play unrecognized club cricket for Voorburg Cricket Club and captains the team in the Dutch Topklasse. 7
In January 2017, he joined Fairtree, an investment management company in Cape Town, South Africa as an Investment Specialist and in January 2021, he took the position of the Global Investment Specialist at Fairtree in The Netherlands. Engelbrecht joined Providence Hotels based in South Africa and the United Kingdom as a Director of Business Development in January 2023. 8
Sybrand Engelbrecht got married to his long-time girlfriend Cecilia Nel on 8 April 2017 after dating for 6 long years. The couple became parents of a baby boy in June 2020 and they are expecting their second child in December 2023. 9 10 11

Just a week before his 35th birthday and seven years after his last professional game, Engelbrecht earned a highly unlikely World Cup call-up when he was named in the 15-member squad for the Netherlands. He has played 54 first-class, 58 List A, and 45 T20s matches. His eligibility to play for the Netherlands was cleared by the ICC last month and he played limited-overs matches for Netherlands A against Guernsey in which he scored 43* and 107*.

Netherlands squad for World Cup: Scott Edwards (captain & wicket-keeper), Colin Ackermann, Shariz Ahmed, Wesley Barresi, Logan van Beek, Aryan Dutt, Sybrand Engelbrecht, Ryan Klein, Bas de Leede, Paul van Meekeren, Roelof van der Merwe, Teja Nidamanuru, Max O’Dowd, Vikram Singh, and Saqib Zulfiqar.
Noah Croes and Kyle Klein are the travelling reserves. 12
