Dunith Wellalage is a Sri Lankan International cricketer, who plays as a slow left-arm orthodox bowler and a left-handed batsman. He represents Galle in domestic cricket and Jaffna Kings in the Lanka Premier League (IPL).

Dunith was born on 9 January 2003 to Suranga Wellalage and his wife Harshani Kanchana in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He has two younger brothers, Pulina Wellalage and Chamath Wellalage. Chamath plays cricket for St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa, and Pulina is a Badminton player and had won two gold medals for Sri Lanka in the Under-17 Boys Badminton Asia Regional Championship 2022 held in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates. 2.
His father, Suranga Wellalage was also a wicketkeeper-batsman and had captained the cricket team of Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa. 3
He initially studied at St. Sebastian’s College in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, and later shifted to St. Joseph’s College in Colombo, Sri Lanka for better cricket facilities.

Dunith Wellalage was the captain of Sri Lanka’s team for the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies. He contributed with both bat and ball during the tournament and finished the tournament as the highest wicket-taker with 17 wickets at an impressive average of 13.58 and also scored 264 runs in the tournament at an average of 44, ending up as Sri Lanka’s highest run scorer. 4 5

The young spinner made his international debut for Sri Lanka in an One Day International (ODI) match against Australia on 14 June 2022 at Pallekele. In his debut match, he picked up two wickets and his maiden international wicket was of Steven Smith. 7
He made his test debut for Sri Lanka against Pakistan on 28 July 2022 at Galle. 8
In July 2022, he was signed pre-draft as a direct local signing by the Jaffna Kings in the Diamond B category ($ 25,000; approx LKR 9 million) for the third edition of the Lanka Premier League. 9
Wellalage underlined his all-round credentials on 12 September 2023 at the Asia Cup 2023 Super Four match against India at the R Premadasa stadium in Colombo, when he first picked up his maiden 5-wicket haul and dismantled the formidable Indian batting lineup by dismissing Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya to register his career-best ODI figures of 5-40 and then top-scored for Sri Lanka with 42 not out but could not stop Indian team from winning the match by 41 runs. 10
