Rohit Sharma in an Indian cricketer. He is the current captain of the Indian national team, plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket and captains Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
He was born on April 30, 1987 in a hindu brahmin family to Gurunath Sharma and his wife Purnima Sharma in Bansod, Nagpur, Maharashtra. He also has a younger brother, Vishal Sharma.
His father Gurunath Sharma worked as a caretaker of a transport firm storehouse.
Rohit Sharma's mother tongue is telugu as his mother, Purnima Sharma is from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
He was raised by his grandparents and uncles in Borivali due to his father's low income.
His uncle enrolled him in a cricket camp in 1999 where he was coached by Dinesh Lad who advised him to change his school to Swami Vivekanand International School as cricket facilities were better there. But when Rohit told him about his poor financial condition, he got him a scholarship.
Rohit Sharma started his cricket career as an off-spinner and used to bat at number 8. Dinesh Lad noticed his batting ability and promoted him to open the innings.
He made his ODI debut against Ireland in Belfast on 23 June 2007. He was slotted at number seven in the batting order and did not got a chance to bat as India won the game by 9 wickets.
He made his T20I debut against England in Durban on September 19 2007 during 2007 ICC World Twenty20. He was slotted at number seven in the batting order and did not got a chance to bat as India won the game by 18 runs. It was the same match in which Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes in a single over off Stuart Broad and also the fastest T20 fifty of just 12 balls.
He made his Test cricket debut at Eden Gardens in Kolkata against West Indies on 6 November 2013 during Sachin Tendulkar's farewell series. Rohit scored 177 runs in india's first innings and India won by an innings and 51 runs inside 3 days.
On 2 November 2013, Rohit Sharma scored 209 runs off 158 balls against Australia in bengaluru and established a then-world record for the most sixes (16) in an ODI inning (later broken by Eoin Morgon with 17 sixes).
On 13 November 2014, he broke the world record for the highest score in an ODI innings by scoring 264 runs off 173 balls against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Rohit Sharma scored his 3rd ODI double century on 13 December 2017 against Sri Lanka in Mohali. He scored 208 runs off 153 balls and helped india win by 141 runs. He is the only cricketer to have scored three double-centuries in ODI matches.
Rohit Sharma scored 648 runs with 5 centuries during ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019 to finish as the leading run-scorer in the tournament and won the ICC's Golden Bat award.
He received the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2015 and Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2020.
In 2008, he was signed by Deccan Chargers in Indian Premier League (IPL) for USD 750,000.
On 6 May 2009, Rohit Sharma added another feather to his cap. He bagged a hat-trick for the Deccan Chargers against the Mumbai Indians at the Centurion in South Africa in IPL by dismissing Abhishek Nayar, Harbhajan Singh and Saurabh Tiwary.
