Mithun Chakraborty is an indian actor and politician who worked mainly in hindi and bengali movies. He has appeared in more than 350 films and starred in a leading roles in more than 250 films. He is the recipient of two Filmfare Awards and three National Film Awards.
Mithun Chakraborty was born as Gouranga Chakraborty on June 16, 1950 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India to Basantokumar Chakraborty and Santirani Chakraborty. He has 1 brother and 3 sisters.
He was a Naxalite before entering films, but he left the naxalism and returned to his family when his only brother Somnath Chakraborty was electrocuted and killed in an accident. During his days as a naxalite, he was friends with Ravi Ranjan, a popular Naxal figure.
Kalyani Banerjee is Mithun's younger sister. She is married to Pijus Banerjee. Kalyani and Pijus have a son named Daebuu Banerjee who made his acting debut with Tum Jo Mile (2010).
His youngest sister never married and took sanyas in 1984.
Mithun did his schooling from The Oriental Seminary, Kolkata, West Bengal, India and later did B.Sc. Chemistry from Scottish Church College, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. After that, he graduated from Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.
He passed out from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune in the year 1974. His batch-mates were Rama Vij, Ranjeeta Kaur, Vijayendra Ghatge and Mala Jaggi.
Mithun made his acting debut with the art film Mrigayaa (1976), for which he won his first National Film Award for Best Actor.
In 1982, he shot to superstardom with Disco Dancer opposite Kim Yashpal. The movie was a box-office success not only in india but in the Soviet Union also.
In 1989, Mithun entered in the Limca Book of Records by starred in record 19 films in a leading role. This record is still unbroken.
In 1991, he won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Krishnan Iyer M.A. in the film Agneepath starring Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role.
He won three National Film Awards. Best Actor for "Mrigayaa" in 1977, Best Actor for "Tahader Katha" in 1993 and Best Supporting Actor for "Vivekananda" in 1994.
Mithun was in a relationship with Mamata Shankar, his co star from his first film Mrigayaa (1976).
Mithun got married to actress Helena Luke in 1979, but they filed for a divorce after 4 months of marriage.
After that, he got married to actress Yogeeta Bali in 1979. Mithun and Yogeeta have four children: three sons (Mahaakshay Chakraborty, Ushmey Chakraborty and Namashi Chakraborty) and an adopted daughter Dishani Chakraborty.
In 1995, Mithun started his own music company named "Pinky Industries" named after the nickname of his wife Yogeeta Bali. The first film which released under the company's label was a Bengali film titled Bhagya Vidhaata.
In 2010, Guinea-Bissau issued a postal stamp in Mithun Chakraborty's honour.
Mithun Chakraborty was elected as Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament on February 7, 2014 from All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). He resigned as a Rajya Sabha MP on December 26, 2016
He joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on March 7, 2021 in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kailash Vijayvargiya.
Rani Mukerji fondly call him Mama Chakraborty. Mithun consider her as daughter since rani’s aunt Debashree Roy have helped him a lot during his struggling days.
