Melania Trump is a former Slovene-American model who served as the first lady of the United States from 2017 to 2021, as the wife of President Donald Trump. Her real name is Melanija Knavs.
She was born on April 26, 1970 to Viktor Knavs & Amalija Ulčnik in Novo Mesto, Slovenia (then part of Yugoslavia). She has an elder sister Ines Knauss and elder half-brother from her father's previous relationship but never met him in person.
Her father, Viktor Knavs was a car and motorcycle dealer and was a member of the Slovenian Communist Party in Yugoslavia (now Slovenia).
Her mother, Amalija Ulčnik worked as a patternmaker at the children's clothing manufacturer Jutranjka in Sevnica.
She did her schooling from Secondary School of Design and Photography, Ljubljana, Slovenia. She then took admission at the University of Ljubljana to study Architecture and Design but left college after one year to pursue a career in modeling.
During her modeling days, she changed her surname from the Slovene version "Knavs" to the German version "Knauss" and started being known as Melanija Knauss.
In 1992, she participated in the Jana Magazine's "Look of the Year" contest held in Ljubljana. Top three contestants of the contest were promised an international modeling contract. She was runner-up in the contest.
In 1996, she moved to the United States from Slovenia on a visitor's visa and then obtained H-1B work visas.
She was a successful model and has posed for GQ, Front, Vogue, Vanity Fair and FHM.
She met Donald Trump at a party in September 1998 and the couple started dating each other. Melania got married to Donald Trump on January 22, 2005 in Palm Beach, Florida. It was her first marriage and donald's third marriage. She wore a US$200,000 wedding dress made by John Galliano of the house of Christian Dior.
Their son Barron Trump was born on March 20, 2006 in Manhattan, New York City.
She became a US citizen in 2006.
