Nicola Bulley was a 45-year-old British woman who went missing from St Michael’s on Wyre, Lancashire, United Kingdom on 27 January 2023 while walking her dog, Willow. She was a mortgage adviser by profession and has two daughters with her 44-year-old partner Paul Ansell.
Bulley was born in 1977 to Ernest Bulley and his wife Dot Bulley in Chelmsford, Essex, England, United Kingdom. She also has a sister named Louise Cunningham.
She has 2 daughters named Harriet Ansell (9-year-old) and Sophia Ansell (6-year-old) with her partner Paul Ansell.
She studied at William de Ferris School in South Woodham Ferrers, England and later graduated in 1996 from Thurrock Technical College in Grays Thurrock, Thurrock, England.
Nicola Bulley worked as a Mortgage Advisor for The Mortgage People from September 2000 to April 2006 and for Apple Tree Finance Limited from April 2006 to September 2008. She joined EFS Freight Services as a Client Services Manager in September 2008 and worked there till October 2011. On 27 January 2023, Ms Bulley drove from her home to the nearby village of St Michael’s on Wyre after dropping off her daughters at their school at around 8:40 am and then went on her usual dog walk alongside the river. Timeline: 8:43 am: Nicola Bulley walked along the path by the River Wyre with her springer spaniel dog ‘Willow’ after dropping her daughters off at school. 8:50 am: A dog walker who knows Ms Bulley saw her walking along the lower field along the river with her dog. Their dogs interacted for a while before the witness left the area. 8:53 am: Ms Bulley sent an email to her employer. 8:57 am: She sent a text to a friend to arrange a playdate for their children that week. 9:01 am: Ms Bulley joined a Microsoft Teams call, keeping her phone’s camera and microphone off. 9:10 am: A witness who knows Ms Bulley saw her walking on the upper field along the river with her dog. 9:30 am: The Teams call was ended by its host but she remained logged on. 9:35 am: Her mobile phone was found on a bench by the River Wyre by a passer-by, still connected to a work call. Willow was found alone near the bench and showed no signs of having been in the river & a dog’s harness was found on the ground between the bench and the river. 2
Her friend, Emma White set up a fundraiser on GoFundMe to help Nicola’s family in the tough times but later took it down after receiving flak on social media. Initially, the fundraiser sought to raise around £100,000 but later changed it to £50,000 and finally £5000 before deleting the post altogether on 7th February 2023. After deleting the Emma shared a post on Facebook apologizing for creating a fundraiser without getting permission from Nicola’s family and added that the money donated will be refunded to the donors by GoFundMe. “We have been asked by friends for a page for donations, the family was unaware. I got help to set this up, hence the husband’s comment and the £. I have since removed and can only apologise to anyone,” Emma wrote.
In a press conference on 15th February 2023, Lancashire Police stated that they did not find any evidence of a criminal aspect or third-party involvement in the disappearance of Ms Bulley and they suspect that she might have fallen into the River Wyre. A police spokesman said, Sadly, it is clear from speaking to Paul and the family that Nicola had in the past suffered with some significant issues with alcohol which were brought on by her ongoing struggles with the menopause and that these struggles had resurfaced over recent months. This caused some real challenges for Paul and the family. The police came under fire and have been criticized heavily on social media for making Ms Bulley’s struggles with alcohol and peri-menopause public. 3
On 19 February at around 11:35 am, the police were notified by a couple that they found a body in the river while walking their dog. The body was found just a mile away from where Bulley was last seen walking her dog. The next day, Police confirmed that the body found in the River Wyre on Sunday is Nicola Bulley. “Sadly we are now able to confirm that yesterday we recovered Nicola Bulley from the River Wyre. Nicola’s family have been informed and are of course devastated. Our thoughts are with them at this time, as well as with all her loved ones and the wider community.”, a senior officer said. 4
