Sutapa Sikdar is an Indian screenwriter, dialogue writer & producer best known for being the wife of legendary late actor Irrfan Khan.
Sutapa was born on 18 September 1967 into an Assamese Brahmin family in Delhi, India. She also has a sister named Sumana Datta.
She did her schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Andrews Ganj, New Delhi, and later graduated from the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi.
Sutapa Sikdar met Irrfan as classmates in the National School of Drama in Delhi and the duo fell in love. They got married on 23 February 1995 in a simple court marriage and the couple has 2 sons, Babil Khan and Ayaan Khan.

She revealed in an interview that she ragged Irrfan Khan when they first met at the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi. Irrfan asked her for directions to somewhere but Sutapa misguided him and sent him somewhere completely different and also lied to him that she was his senior. 1
She has also acted in the made-for-television movie Laal Ghaas Par Neele Ghode (1992) co-starring Irrfan Khan and Mita Vashisht.
Sikdar wrote the script for Zee TV’s popular television drama series ‘Banegi Apni Baat’ starring actors such as Irrfan Khan, R. Madhavan, Surekha Sikri, Shefali Chhaya, Anita Kanwal, Divya Seth, Achint Kaur, Firdaus Dadi, Sadiya Siddiqui, Varun Badola, and Rakhee Tandon, among others. 2
She worked as a dialogue writer in films like Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), Supari (2003), Shabd (2005), and Kahaani (2012).
In 1999, she wrote the script for the ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain Kya?’ segment of the TV show ‘Star Bestsellers’ starring Irrfan Khan and Tisca Chopra. 3
She turned producer with Madaari (2016) and later also produced Qarib Qarib Singlle (2017), both starring Irrfan Khan in the lead.
Her husband, Irrfan Khan passed away on 29 April 2020, at the age of 53 at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. He was suffering from a neuroendocrine tumor, a rare form of cancer. 4
Her sons, Babil and Ayaan were diagnosed with anxiety and depression after the death of their beloved father. 5
