Shobana Chandrakumar Pillai popularly known as Shobana is a two times National Award-winning Indian actress and Bharatanatyam dancer. She has acted in more than 200 movies in Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, and English languages. 2

She was born on 21 March 1970 to Chandrakumar Pillai and his wife Anandam Chandrakumar in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. Shobana is the only child of her parents and has no siblings. 3
Shobana is the niece of legendary dancers, the Travancore sisters, Lalitha, Padmini, and Ragini and she received her Bharatanatyam training at the Chidambaram Academy in Chennai, Tamil Nadu under legendary Bharatanatyam exponent Chitra Visweswaran. 1
She made her debut as a child artist in Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore starrer Amar Prem (1972). 4
She was introduced to films by Jaya Chakravarthy (Hema Malini's mother), who spotted her with her aunt and one of the Travancore sisters, Padmini Ramachandran.
Shobana had a major role in the Tamil-language drama film Mangala Nayagi (1980) directed by Krishnan–Panju, starring Srikanth and K. R. Vijaya. She won the best child actor award for her acting in the movie.
She made her acting debut in a lead role with the Malayalam-language film April 18 (1984) opposite Balachandra Menon. 2
In 1993, Shobana won her first Best Actress National Film Award for her acting in A.M. Fazil's Malayalam-language psychological thriller film Manichitrathazhu (1993) co-starring Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi.
In 2002, Shobana won her second Best Actress National Film Award performance in the English language film Mitr, My Friend (2002) directed by Revathi.
She was honoured with Padma Shri by the Government of India for her contribution towards classical dance in 2006. 2
In 2011, Shobana adopted a girl child as a single parent and named her Anantha Narayani Chandrakumar. 2
She was last seen in Varane Avashyamund (2020) starring Suresh Gopi, Dulquer Salmaan and Kalyani Priyadarshan.
In 2018, she received an honorary doctorate (PHD) from Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute, Chennai and The Vinaya Mission University, Salem. 1
In 2021, she received a Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) degree from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, Kerala.
She runs a dance school academy named Kalarpana in Chennai. Shobana founded it in 1994. 2
