Gayatri Joshi is a former Indian actress, model, and VJ best known for playing the female lead in Shah Rukh Khan starrer Swades: We, the People (2004).
Gayatri was born on 20th March 1977 into a Marathi-speaking Hindu Brahmin family to Ramniwas Ji Runthala and his wife Nootan Joshi in Nagpur, Maharastra. She also has a sister named Ahana Joshi.
Her father, Ramniwas Ji Runthala was a government official & her mother, Nootan Joshi worked as a UNICEF volunteer. ³
She did her schooling at Mount Carmel High School in Nagpur and The J.B. Vachha Girls High School in Mumbai & later graduated with a degree in commerce from Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai.
She started modeling in her college days in 1996 and modeled for big brands like Ponds, Godrej, Bombay Dyeing, Philips, Sunsilk, and LG & was also seen in Hyundai advertisements with Shah Rukh Khan.
Joshi began working as a Video Jockey (VJ) and hosted ‘Junglee Jukebox’ on Channel V India but left it to pursue her dream of winning the beauty pageant.
Gayatri Joshi was one of the five finalists of the 1999 Femina Miss India pageant which was won by Gul Panag, Yukta Mookhey was the 1st runner-up and Shivangi Parikh was the 2nd runner-up. She was crowned Miss India International 1999 through voting by viewers and represented India at the Miss International beauty pageant in Japan where she finished in the Top 15.
She has also appeared in the music videos of Jagjit Singh’s “Woh Kaghaz Ki Kashti” and Hans Raj Hans’s “Jhanjaria Chankati Gori”.
She made her film debut with Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Swades: We, the People (2004) opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Although, her first and last film ‘Swades’ may not have performed well at the box office but her performance was liked by the audience as well as critics.
Joshi stopped acting after Swades and tied the knot with Vikas Oberoi, Promoter & Managing Director of Oberoi Constructions at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on 27 August 2005. Her elder son, Vihaan Oberoi was born on 1 September 2006 and the younger son, Yuvaan Oberoi was born in 2008.
On 16th July 2019, Gayatri lost ₹40,000 to a credit card fraud. Her assistant filed a police complaint on her behalf and Juhu police booked an unidentified person for allegedly fraudulently withdrawing the money from Gayatri’s account. ⁴
The net worth of her husband, Vikas Oberoi is estimated to be around $3 Billion or ₹24687 Crores according to Forbes as of 30th October 2022. ⁵

In October 2023, Gayatri Joshi and her husband Vikas Oberoi were driving their Lamborghini during the Sardinia Supercar Tour in Sardina, Italy when they met with a car accident that left an elderly couple dead. The accident took place when their Lamborghini and a red Ferrari tried to overtake a camper van at the same time, which resulted in the overturning of the van and the Ferrari catching fire.
