Vikas Oberoi is an Indian Billionaire businessman. He is the chairman & managing director of Oberoi Realty Limited, one of India's largest publicly listed real estate development company headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Vikas is married to former bollywood actress Gayatri Joshi.
He is also the founder of 'Oberoi Foundation' which focuses on the development of educational institutions and other social infrastructure. The Oberoi International School which opened in 2008 in Mumbai is such an initiative by the Foundation that aims to provide world-class education for children.
He was born in the year 1969 to Ranvir Oberoi and his wife Santosh Oberoi in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He also has a sister, Bindu Oberoi.
His father, Ranvir Oberoi started off as an investor and broker in the mumbai's real estate market in the 1970s and the 1980s and operated from a 300 sq. ft-office in Maker V in Nariman Point. He used to book flats in advance sales, putting down 10% of the cost & sold them at a profit later on after the prices rose. Ranvir Oberoi then decided to turn developer himself and liquidated all his investments in realty and started purchasing land instead. [5]
Vikas Oberoi graduated from Mumbai's Jai Hind College and after attending classes, he used to join his father by afternoon at his Nariman Point office. He is the alumnus of the Owner/President Management programme at Harvard Business School, Boston, USA. [6]
In 2002, he acquired pharma company Novartis's 60-acre campus in Goregaon, Mumbai for ₹107 crore and converted the plot into a residential-cum-commercial township which houses residential towers, a mall, two office buildings, a school and a five-star hotel. Oberoi Realty also acquired another four-acre land parcel in Worli from pharmaceutical company GalxoSmithKline in 2003.
Vikas Oberoi tied the knot with former bollywood actress Gayatri Joshi at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on 27 August 2005. His elder son, Vihaan Oberoi was born on September 1, 2006 and the younger son, Yuvaan Oberoi was born in 2008.
In 2010, he was felicitated with the True Entrepreneur Of The Year Award at the Economic Times ACETECH Awards in Mumbai. [7]
In 2013, he landed in trouble after Mohit Bhardwaj, a resident of Oberoi Splendour, one of his own projects lodged an FIR against him and 3 others accusing them of duping flat owners by delivering smaller flats with lesser ceiling than what was promised. According to his complaint, developer had cheated the flat buyers to the tune of ₹142.56 crore. [8]
He was also involved in the Stamp paper Controversy in 2014. According to the reports, 20 stamp papers of ₹100 each were purchased Bombay High Court premises in May 2014. Originally the stamp papers were on the names of A A Lale but Oberoi and his accomplices applied whitener on names of A A Lale and changed it to Ajit Rajnikant Pancholi and also changed the stamp paper purchase date using the whitener. After that, the accused personated as Ajit Rajnikant Pancholi before the Notary and got the power of attorney notarised. Oberoi however denied all the claims.
He was honoured with the "Best Successor - 2nd Generation" award at the HT Mumbai Real Estate Awards in 2018. [9]
In 2020, he was ranked 1196th in forbes world's billionaire's list and 63rd in india's billionaire's list.
He holds 67.7% shares in Oberoi Realty Ltd. and was listed as 65th richest Indian and 951st richest among world's billionaire with an estimated net worth of around $3 Billion or ₹24687 Crores by forbes as of 30th October 2022.[10] [11]
He has a passion for flying and skiing & holds a pilot's license.
Vikas Oberoi owns a Westin hotel in suburban Mumbai and is building the city's first Ritz-Carlton hotel and residences.
