Leander Paes is an indian former tennis player. Paes is regarded as one of the greatest tennis players in doubles and he is a 18 Time Grand Slam Champion in Men's Doubles and Mixed Doubles categories, 7 Time Olympian, Singles Olympic Medal Winner. He also holds the record for the most doubles wins (46) in the Davis Cup.
Paes was born on June 17, 1973 to Vece Paes and Jennifer Paes in Calcutta, West Bengal, India. Both of his parents were renowned athletes. His father, Vece Paes was a Sports Medicine Doctor and was also the part of the bronze medal winning Indian hockey team at the 1972 Munich Olympics but he did not received a medal medal because he didn't played in any of the matches and his mother Jennifer Paes led the Indian basketball team in the 1980 Asian basketball championship.
He is the direct descendant of famous bengali poet Michael Madhusudan Dutta through his mother.
Leander Paes has 2 sisters, Maria Paes and Jacqueline Christina Paes.
He did his schooling from La Martiniere, Kolkata and Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School, Chennai. Then graduated from St. Xavier's College, University of Calcutta.
Paes enrolled with the Britannia Amritraj Tennis Academy, Chennai in 1985, where he was coached by Dave O'Meara. His hard work and years of practice at BAT helped him to reach No.1 in junior world ranking and winning the Wimbledon Junior title in 1990 at the age of 17.
At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics he beat Fernando Meligeni to win the bronze medal. He became the first indian to win an individual medal after K.D. Jadhav, who won bronze at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He was awarded india's highest sporting honor by the government of India, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 1996.
From 1996, he partnered with Mahesh Bhupathi in Tennis doubles. Their pairing was not successful in the first year and they reached the round of 32 only at Wimbledon. However in 1997 they reached US Open semifinals. In 1999, Paes and Bhupathi reached finals of all four Grand Slams, winning Wimbledon and French Open.
The duo of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi was nicknamed the "Indian Express". The Indian duo has a 303–103 career record together. They also have a Davis Cup record for the longest doubles winning streak, with 24 straight wins.
In 2003, Paes was diagnosed with neurocysticercosis, a parasitic brain infection and had to miss the French Open due to it. He fully recovered from the disease by the end of the year.
In 2010, he joined the Board of Directors of Olympic Gold Quest, a foundation co-founded by Geet Sethi and Prakash Padukone to support talented Indian athletes.
He became the only second man to win Wimbledon titles in three decades after Rod Laver to win Wimbledon titles in three decades when he won mixed doubles Wimbledon title in 2010.
In 2012 London Olympics, Paes was paired with Sania Mirza in the mixed-doubles but Sania expressed her unhappiness with the pairing and said she would have liked to be paired with Mahesh Bhupathi. Both Bhupathi and Bopanna also refused to play with Paes in the doubles so Paes ended up teaming with Vishnu Vardhan, whose world ranking was 296. Paes and Vardhan could reach only to the second round of the tournament and lost to french silver medalists pair of Llodra & Tsonga.
He tried his luck in acting with the movie Rajdhani Express (2013).
Paes announced his retirement from professional tennis in 2020.
He competed in seven consecutive Olympics from 1992 to 2016, making him the first Indian and the only tennis player to compete in 7 Olympic Games.
He has won eight men's doubles and ten mixed doubles Grand Slam titles.
Leander Paes has played with 164+ partners at various championships across the world.
He played in 96 Grand Slam events in the Main Draw.
Leander Paes was in a relationship with actress Mahima Chaudhary from 2000-2003. In 2005, he came into a live-in relationship with Rhea Pillai, former wife of Sanjay Dutt. Leander and Rhea also has a daughter Aiyana Paes.
Currently he is dating former actress Kim Sharma.
Leander Paes along with actress Nafisa Ali and Mrinalini Deshprabhu joined Trinamool Congress in presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Goa ahead of the 2022 assembly polls on On October 29, 2021. 3
In February 2022, a metropolitan magistrate court in Mumbai has held in its order that Leander Paes has committed various acts of domestic violence against Rhea Pillai. The court also directed him to pay monthly rent of Rs 50,000, apart from monthly maintenance of Rs 1 lakh to Rhea if she chooses to leave their shared residence. 4
