Kiran Rao is an Indian film producer, writer and director. She is known mainly for being the second wife of famous bollywood actor Aamir Khan.
She was born on November 7, 1973 in a Telugu family to Shrinivas Rao and Belle Shrinivas Rao in Gadwal, Telangana, India.
Her paternal grandfather, Janumpally Rameshwar Rao was the titular Raja of Wanaparthy, a large estate under the Nizam of Hyderabad.
Actress Aditi Rao Hydari is her first cousin.
She grew up in Kolkata and did her schooling from Loreto House, Kolkata. After that, her parents moved to Bengaluru while she moved to Mumbai to study Economics at Sophia College in Mumbai and later did Masters in Mass Communication from A.J.K. Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi.
After completing her studies, she started working as an RJ at All India Radio midnight show. But she wanted to be an Director so she started assisting an advertiser for Rs. 10,000 per month.
Kiran Rao met Aamir Khan on the sets of Lagaan, where she was assisting Ashutosh Gowariker. They got married on 28 December 2005 and after suffering a couple of miscarriages their son Azad Rao Khan was born through a surrogate mother on 25 November 2011. The couple announced their separation via a joint statement on 3 July 2021.
Rao has been a vegan and also influenced Aamir Khan to quit non-vegetarian food and turn vegan.
Kiran Rao revealed on Karan Johar's chat show "Koffee With Karan" that hates taking a shower and has an eating disorder. Aamir defended himself saying, "I do take a bath when I go out for work. And considering most of the time I step out for work, I take a bath most of the time. It is only when I am not stepping out or when I am on a holiday that I don't take a bath."
Rao worked as an assistant director on Lagaan (2001) and Swades (2004) under Ashutosh Gowariker. She also worked as second assistant director to Mira Nair on Monsoon Wedding (2001).
She has also did an uncredited cameo in Dil Chahta Hai (2001).
She wrote and directed the film Dhobi Ghat (2011) and also sung a song Marathi song "Toofan Aalaya" for Paani Foundation in 2017.
Rao was made the chairperson of the Mumbai Film Festival - MAMI in 2015.
In 2015, Aamir expressed about his and Kiran Rao's feelings about rising intolerance in India at an event in New Delhi. Following this, Aamir Khan was heavily criticized and was also dropped as the brand ambassador of Incredible India initiative in 2016.
In 2016, Rao co-founded Paani Foundation, a non-profit organisation working towards drought prevention and watershed management in Maharashtra.
