In July 2023, Vishal Kaliraman from the iconic Chhatrasal Stadium battled bruises and a swollen right eye to win all five matches played in the trials in the 65kg weight category for the Asian games. However, the Indian Olympic Association’s ad-hoc committee announced that Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat will have direct entry into the Indian wrestling team set to compete in the Hangzhou Asian Games and Vishal will only be a standby for Bajrang in the Asian Games. 2

On 20 September 2023, Vishal Kaliraman’s family members, along with the villagers of Sisai protested the direct entry of Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia into the Hangzhou Asian Games. The protesters demanded that IOA conduct trials between Vishal and Bajrang and send the winner of the bout to the Asian Games. Earlier, the Sisai panchayat had announced a reward of ₹75 lakh to Bajrang if he could defeat Vishal. 3
Bajrang Punia posted a video on Twitter and said that he would wrestle Vishal Kaliraman but only after the Asian Games.
