He was born on September 17, 1986 in a Tamil Hindu Brahmin family to Narayanasamy Ravichandran and his wife Ravichandran Chitra in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. His father Narayanasamy Ravichandran also played cricket at club level as a fast bowler. | |
He did his schooling from Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan and St. Bede's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai. After that he graduated with a B. Tech. in Information Technology from Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering in Chennai. | |
Ashwin used to play junior-level cricket as an opening batsman but later on turned into an off-break bowler. | |
Ashwin came into the limelight in 2010 when he started playing for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. On the back of his impressive performance in the 2010 Indian Premier League, he was selected in a second-string squad that toured Zimbabwe in May-June 2010. | |
