Facts
Ranga Bedi is an Indian entrepreneur, best known as the elder brother of actor Kabir Bedi. He was born on 13 May 1934 to Baba Pyare Lal Singh Bedi and his wife, Freda Houlston, in Berlin, Germany. Ranga also has a younger sister named Gulhima Bedi. 1
Ranga Bedi
His parents named him Ranga Trilochan Bedi in honor of journalist Rangaswamy Iyengar, former editor of The Hindu, who supported interracial marriages like theirs. 2
He also had a younger brother named Tilak Bedi, who passed away when he was less than a year old.
His mother, Freda Bedi, played an active role in India’s freedom movement, becoming notably the first British woman to endure a six-month internment in Lahore jail in 1943. In the 1960s, she dedicated herself to working with Tibetan refugees in Kashmir. Eventually, she embraced Buddhism and adopted the name Sister Palmo, or Gelongma Karma Kechog Palmo. Freda Bedi is recognized as the first European woman to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist nun. She passed away in 1977.
He is a 16th-generation descendant of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. 3
Ranga completed his schooling at the Tyndale Biscoe School in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. He then pursued his graduation at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, but dropped out after two years to join Escorts Farm Mechanisation. 4 5
He commenced his career as a tea-planter in 1956 at Borhat Tea Estate in Naharkatia town of Assam. In 1980, he established Bedi and Bedi Private Limited in Bengaluru, specializing in the production of innovative tea manufacturing machines. 5
Ranga Bedi married Umi Bedi on 18 November 1958. The couple has 3 daughters, Seher Bedi, Amarantha Noor Mehera, and Sohni Tanna. 6

He took over a hat-making factory in Italy in 2008 and became India’s one and only milliner. 7
In 2010, Random House India published “Rhymes for Ranga,” a collection of nursery rhymes that his mother, Freda Bedi, wrote for him during his childhood in the 1930s and 1940s. 8
In February 2024, the Karnataka High Court rejected Ranga Bedi’s plea to temporarily restrain Kabir Bedi and the publishing house Westland Publications from selling Kabir Bedi’s autobiography titled “Stories I Must Tell: The Emotional Life of an Actor”. This plea was challenging an order from the trial court. 3
