Facts
Jagdeep Jaffrey was an indian actor and comedian who worked in more than 400 movies. He is best known for his roles as Soorma Bhopali in Sholay (1975), Machchar in Purana Mandir (1983) and Salman Khan's father in Andaz Apna Apna (1994).
Jagdeep was born on March 29, 1939 to Syed Yawar Husain Jaffrey, an advocate and Kaneez Hyder in Datia, Madhya Pradesh, Central Provinces, British India. He has a brother named Amardeep.
His father, Syed Yawar Husain Jaffrey passed away when Jagdeep was still an infant. His mother, Kaneez Hyder had to work as a cook in an orphanage to raise her children.
Jagdeep quit his studies and started selling odd things like kites, soaps, combs etc. on mumbai streets to support his mother. He was spotted by a director on the streets of mumbai and offered him a role of a child in the movie Afsana (1951). He had a very minor role of clapping in a scene in the movie and was paid Rs. 3 for it. Later he also bagged a dialogue in the movie and his remuneration was then, doubled up.
He started his film career as a child artist extra in B.R. Chopra's Afsana (1951) and then went on to work as a child artist in movies like Bimal Roy's Do Bigha Zameen (1954) and P.L. Santoshi's Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke (1957).
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was so much impressed with his performance in the film, Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke (1957) that he gifted Jagdeep his personal staff as a token of appreciation.
His first role as a lead actor was in Bhabhi (1957).
Jagdeep has six children from his three marriages.
He married his first wife Naseem Begam in 1957 when he was 18 years old. He has 3 children, Hussein Jaffrey, Shakira Shafi and Suraiya with his first wife.
In 1960, he married Sughra Begum. He has 2 sons, Javed Jaffrey and Naved Jaffrey with his second wife Sughra Begum.
His third marriage was with Nazima. He has 1 daughter, Muskaan Jaffrey with his third wife Nazima. Nazima's younger sister had come to see Naved for an arranged marriage. Naved rejected the proposal because he was still struggling with his career. This is when Jagdeep and Nazima got involved with each other. There is a age gap of 33 years between the two.
Jagdeep had initially rejected the role of "Soorma Bhopali" in Sholay (1975) but later that role went on to become the biggest success of his life.
He directed the movie Soorma Bhopali (1988) which was inspired from his character in the movie Sholay (1975).
Son Hussein Jaffrey died in 2009 due to throat infection at the age of 50. He had lost his legs in a train accident in 2006.
Real name of Jagdeep was Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jaffrey.
Omprakash Zindabad (2020) was his last released movie.
Jagdeep died at his home in Mumbai on 8 July 2020, following age-related health issues. He was laid to rest at Shia Kabristan in Mumbai on 9 July 2020.
