Mohammed Shami is an Indian international cricketer who plays as a right-arm fast bowler for the Indian national team across all formats. In domestic cricket, he plays for Bengal, and in the Indian Premier League (IPL), he represents the Gujarat Titans.

Shami was born on 3 September 1990 to Tousif Ali Ahmed and his wife Anjuman Ara Begum in Sahaspur Ali Nagar village in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. He has a sister, Sabina Anjum, and two brothers, Mohammed Haseeb Ahmad and Mohammed Kaif. 1

His father, Tausif Ali Ahmed was also an aspiring fast bowler but couldn’t make it beyond Amroha. Shami’s elder brother, Haseeb Ahmad also followed his father’s footsteps but was diagnosed with kidney stones a day before trials for the Uttar Pradesh under-19 team, forcing him to quit cricket. 2
His elder brother, Mohammed Haseeb Ahmad is married to Shama Parveen and the couple has 3 daughters: Yumna Fatima, Amirah Fatima, and Anavia Fatima.

Shami studied at Amir Hasan Khan P.G. College in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, until Class 10. After that, he discontinued his studies to focus on his cricket career. 5
He faced numerous rejections while trying out for the Uttar Pradesh under-19 team so his coach Badruddin Siddique sent him to Kolkata at the age of 16. 2
Shami was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2011 but made his IPL debut for KKR against Rajasthan Royals on 8 April 2013 at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur. 6
Mohammed Shami met Hasin Jahan for the first time during the 2012 Indian Premier League (IPL), where Jahan was employed as a cheerleader for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The couple got married on June 6, 2014, in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh and their daughter Aairah Shami was born on July 17, 2015. 7

In March 2018, Mohammed Shami’s ex-wife, Hasin Jahan, shared numerous screenshots of alleged WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger conversations involving Shami and multiple women on her Facebook wall. She also accused Shami of receiving money from a Pakistani woman named Alishba at the behest of an England-based businessman, Mohammad Bhai. Jahan lodged a complaint at the Jadavpur police station, leveling charges of domestic violence, infidelity, attempted murder, and marital rape against Shami.
In response, Shami vehemently denied all the allegations on both his Facebook page and Twitter handle. He asserted that the accusations were part of a conspiracy designed to damage his reputation. 8 9

In January 2023, a Kolkata court ordered Mohammed Shami to pay a monthly alimony of ₹1,30,000 to Hasin Jahan. This sum includes ₹50,000 as personal alimony to Jahan and the remaining ₹80,000 as maintenance costs for their daughter Aairah Shami, who resides with her mother. 10
He made his ODI debut on 6 January 2013 for India against Pakistan at Delhi, where he took 1 wicket by giving away just 23 runs in his 9 overs with 4 maidens and helped the Indian team defeat Pakistan by 10 runs. 11
He made his Test debut on 6 November 2013 for India against West Indies in front of his home crowd at Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata. In an impressive performance, he picked up 9 wickets in the match, playing a crucial role in India’s victory over West Indies by an innings and 51 runs. 12
