She was born on 22 February 1974 to Jitendra Vora and Harshaben Vora in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, Maharashtra.
She did her schooling at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Vidyalaya in Mira Road East, Mumbai. After that, she graduated from L.S. Raheja College of Arts and Commerce, Mumbai, and then did her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in Civil law at Mumbai’s D.G. Ruparel College of Arts, Science, and Commerce and then went on to do a Diploma in Mass Communication at K. J. Somaiya Institute of Management, Mumbai. 1 2
Jigna was working as an intern with a law firm when her parents fixed her marriage with Suresh Mehta, who claimed to be an engineer and owning a printing press in Gujarat. However, she later found that none of it was true, she got divorced in 2004 and returned to her family’s home in Ghatkopar with her four-year-old son Nishil Mehta. 3
Vora began her career in media as a court reporter in 2005 at the Free Press Journal (FPJ) before joining Mumbai Mirror. She covered her first underworld story in December 2005 when Chhota Rajan’s wife Sujata Nikhalje was arrested for making extortion threats against a builder. In 2008, she joined the Asian Age and covered the story of Matka Queen Jaya Chheda, who planned the murder of her ex-husband Matka King Suresh Bhagat to gain control of his Matka business in Mumbai. 4
Jigna Vora’s life and promising career came to a standstill in 2011. She was 37 years old and was working as a deputy bureau chief at the Asian Age’s Mumbai bureau. She was one of the two main suspects in the murder of senior crime journalist Jyotirmoy Dey, who was murdered by members of the Chhota Rajan gang on 11 June 2011 near his house in Powai. Jigna was accused of instigating Chhota Rajan against Dey by sending him articles written by Dey through emails and was also suspected of providing the shooters with details such as Dey’s bike’s license plate number, his office, and residential addresses. Vora denied all the allegations and said that she communicated with Chota Rajan just for an interview.

On 25 November 2011, Mumbai police arrested Jigna Vora from her Ghatkopar home for her alleged role in the murder. After spending nine months in prison, she was granted bail by a special MCOCA court on 27 July 2012 with a condition that she would not discuss the case with the media or anyone except her lawyer. She was acquitted of all charges by the special MCOCA court on 2 May 2018. 5
Her mother, Harshaben Vora passed away on 9 June 2015 after suffering a heart attack. 5
While in prison, she underwent a spiritual transformation after her interaction with the saffron lady Pragya Singh Thakur, an accused in the Malegaon blast case.
Once, Jigna recalled being offered an unusual job opportunity while in prison. Seema Kapoor, who was accused of heading a prostitution racket, was granted bail and preparing to leave Byculla prison gave her number and asked her to call her up when out of prison and told her that she would make at least a lakh a week. 6
After she was acquitted of all charges, she penned her biographical memoir “Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days in Prison” which was published by Penguin India in September 2019. 7
